Still raining this morning and 40 degrees.....Going to be a great day!!
From Destruction Bay to the US Border road conditions vary between good and very poor. Take your time and be very aware of the frost heaves, which cause sudden dips in the road.
Still have pavement
Red flags mark the bulges and dips in the road surface
Pavement is almost impossible to maintain in this region of heavy permafrost
The next 140 miles offer the slowest driving on the entire Alaska Highway
The surface is mostly muskeg, sort of half swamp and half ground
Canadian crews work 24 hours during their short work season
The road is like a washboard....everything rattled
20 to 40 MPH.....took us 4 hours to cover this section
Vent-like structures alongside the highway are part of a research project on Permafrost
Canadian border
Welcome to Alaska
We are pretty but look like everyone else
US Border
Coming into Tok
Tok is the "Gateway to Alaska". It is the only Alaska community that you must pass through twice... once when arriving in Alaska and when leaving Alaska.
The governor proclaimed Tok "Mainstreet Alaska" in 1991. Elevation 1,435 feet...Population @1250 people.....and they cater to those coming to Alaska.....
Day 31.....Alaska Adventure at 4,286 miles.....staying at the Sourdough Campground and the Captain is using their wash center for the truck and coach.....Let's say we had a jar full of quarters.....
