Seward to Wasilla

August 1st is a special day for Rik and I......this August 1st marks our 25th anniversary.....and we are enjoying the day in Alaska......really nice....an adventure of a lifetime.....

Departure day....headed north in the rain.....53 degrees...Day 78 of our Alaska Adventures.....

 Seward Highway

 Kenai Lake

 Where is the sun?

Remember this is August and still seeing lots of snow

 within 50 miles of Anchorage

In Alaska you must drive with your headlights on

Tide going out in the Turnagain Arm

Looking across at Hope and the Kenai Peninsula

Guess we won't see a Bore Tide this time

Big Road and traffic coming into Anchorage

And out of Anchorage into Wasilla

We are spending an extra day in the Mat-Su Valley to drive the 49-mile-long road that loops over Hatcher Pass between the Glenn Highway and the Parks Highway....scenic alpine country and the Historic Independence Mine.....

this section is paved with lots of trees

Little Susitna River

Rugged Mountains

Knit Arm of Cook Inlet

Stretch your legs and walk Saddi

Hatcher Pass Lodge which is open in the winter

Hatcher Pass Road is an old-time Alaska road...
narrow, bumpy, dirt and gravel

mine manager'a home built in 1939

Independence Mine State Historical Park

Bunk House

Mine operated from 1938 through 1941

Apartments for married couples

Alaska Pacific Consolidated Mine Company
one of the largest gold producers in the area

Inside the Mine manager's home

Great fireplace

gravel stretch is steep, narrow switch-backed road

with potholes and washboard

The Pass opens in June (depending upon snow)

And closes after Labor Day

3,886 feet

You can see for miles

Where does this lead too

Historic Lucky Shot Mine

We can say we have been over Hatcher Pass

Wooden bridge

One last road to drive in the area....Knik-Goose Bay Road.....why I don't know.....Didn't see Knik Arm of Cook Inlet...didn't see Historic Knik because it doesn't exist today.....but did see the Knik Museum and Sled Dog Musher's Hall of Fame which was closed.....
Historic Knik has been called "Dog Mushing Center of the World" in reference to the many dog mushers that have lived in this area.....now you have the facts....

Museum used to be part of a mine

Cache

Pretty flowers

For our friend Harriett.....

Think the temperature reached 56 today......sun is coming........we leave tomorrow for Talkeetna....
