Chicken Alaska

We stayed at Tundra RV Park in Tok....quiet.....no dogs walking by....no people walking by....no bears walking by.....45 degrees the next morning....and sunshine

Looking for our way out....back to the Alaska Highway

The Taylor Highway was born in 1951 and is a highway for stouthearted drivers who promise to pay close attention to the road; let the navigator take the pictures......Partially paved and narrow, the Taylor climbs and descends, turns and doubles back through and above some of the most spectacular country in east-central Alaska.  I'm sure you believe all that....

They say its paved so the coach is going to Chicken

 2004 Taylor fire

Suppose to find moose here

What a person standing in the road saying 15 minutes

Follow me....oh me....

We had over 2 miles of rough gravel and the rest was patched, paved and pretty smooth.....and we are in Chicken at the Chicken Creek Campground......30 Amp.....for 2 days...

Chicken Facts
Chicken is called Chicken because the original settlers, actually gold miners, couldn't spell Ptarmigan.  They wanted to call the town Ptarmigan because local birds filled many a pot in their camps.  Ptarmigan were also called Chickens and that's how the town got its name.
Winter population is around 10.  Summer numbers soar to 50 or so.  There is no city water, sewer or electric service in Chicken.  There is no cell service in this area.  Generators and outhouses are utilized here, with residents providing their own water for drinking and showers, and generating their own electricity.  Our RV Park works off of a generator.  They have a dump station and fresh water fill.

Lunch at the Chicken Creek Cafe

But served at the Chicken Creek Saloon

So we could have a Bud with our burger

There are three stores in "original" Chicken

Giant Chicken statue

The 18-by-12 foot chicken was built of recycled high school lockers in Homer,AK, and transported to Chicken by truck (averaging 20 mph)

Chicken is still a raw frontier town, which is one of its charms.
